Besieged and Betrayed: The West Bank’s Endless Occupation

The recent standoff between Israeli troops and settlers blockading Palestinian homes in Qusra, a village in the occupied West Bank, has exposed once again the dark underbelly of Israel’s occupation. Israeli soldiers failed to remove the settlers, highlighting the military’s powerlessness against extremist elements it claims to control.

This incident is symptomatic of a broader pattern of impunity for violence by Israeli settlers towards Palestinians in the West Bank. For years, these settlers have been emboldened by their own sense of invincibility and the lack of meaningful repercussions from the Israeli authorities. This has created an environment where attacks on Palestinian homes and livelihoods are seen as acceptable.

The siege began with a deliberate act of provocation: settlers set up camp outside a Palestinian village, cutting off essential supplies to those living within. This tactic – blockading food, medicine, and electricity to break the will of residents – has been used before by Israeli settlers. The fact that the military declared the area a “closed military zone” rather than confronting the settlers directly speaks volumes about its priorities.

The occupation of the West Bank, which began in 1967, has created a situation where over 500,000 Israelis live alongside three million Palestinians under the umbrella of an internationally recognized illegal settlement. This demographic imbalance is the result of decades-long land appropriation and displacement facilitated by successive Israeli governments. The current administration’s stance on settlements represents an escalation of past policies.

The humanitarian toll of this occupation cannot be overstated. Violence against Palestinians has surged in recent months, with at least 1,097 Palestinians killed since the start of the Gaza war last year – a staggering number that includes both militants and civilians. In contrast, over 48 Israelis have been killed during the same period.

The international community’s response to these events has been muted, with some voices emphasizing Israel’s right to self-defense rather than its obligation to respect Palestinian rights under occupation. This selective outrage ignores the fundamental issue at stake: the rule of law and protection of civilian populations.

As we watch this drama unfold, it’s worth remembering that the cycle of violence is not new in the West Bank. It’s a story of creeping annexation, growing resistance, and international complacency – one that has been repeated many times before. Yet each episode seems to bring with it a sense of inevitability: as if nothing can be done to change this trajectory.

But that’s a false narrative. Change is possible, though it requires more than just condemning settlement activity or urging restraint from Israeli troops. It demands a fundamental shift in how we view and engage with the conflict – one that recognizes the inherent dignity and rights of Palestinians living under occupation. Anything less perpetuates the status quo: besieged and betrayed, with no end in sight.
