Electric Shock Gloves: A Dubious Solution for a Complex Problem

Tom Homan, the border czar, has touted these devices as a safer alternative to lethal force.

However, a closer examination reveals that the use of electric shock gloves by ICE agents raises several red flags. The Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration has already led to a disturbing number of fatalities, including the shooting deaths of motorists in Maine and Texas last month. By introducing electric shock gloves as a less lethal alternative, ICE is essentially saying that it will not tolerate any form of resistance or non-compliance.

The gloves themselves are manufactured by Compliant Technologies LLC and emit a painful electric shock intended to “help someone get compliant.” But what does this mean in practice? How often will these gloves be used, and what are the consequences for individuals who refuse to comply? The White House’s defense relies heavily on anecdotal evidence from a single jailer in Kentucky, who claims that the shocks have been effective in deterring violent behavior.

However, this is hardly a robust case study. Geoff Alpert, a criminology professor at the University of South Carolina, points out that there is limited research on these devices, and their effectiveness remains uncertain. Moreover, ICE’s plan to spend up to $20 million on thousands of gloves raises questions about the agency’s priorities and its willingness to invest in training and de-escalation techniques.

Homan has compared electric shock gloves to Tasers or pepper spray – tools that are already widely used by law enforcement agencies. However, these devices have their own limitations and risks, as critics have long argued. The introduction of electric shock gloves into the mix only serves to muddy the waters further. Alpert notes that it would be wiser for ICE to start with a smaller purchase and study the effectiveness of these devices more broadly before deploying them on a large scale.
